In Climate of Cheap Gas, Forecast for Renewable Energy Finance is Cloudy: Q&A with Michael Butler, CEO of Cascadia Capital
Cascadia Capital CEO Michael Butler knows renewable energy finance. His investment banking firm has been a key player in some of the clean technology sector’s most significant transactions. His forecast for renewable energy is “near term cloudy.” The rush of investments into natural gas is siphoning capital that would have gone into the renewable energy sector. Renewable energy is a viable industry long term, it’s just going to take longer than we all hoped.

Message to Congress: Not Picking Energy Winners Should Not Mean Disadvantaging Clean Tech
Last week I had the privilege to participate in Environmental Entrepreneurs’ (E2) annual advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., joining a small delegation of E2 members to voice the economic benefits of clean energy directly to our nation’s leadership, from Senators and Representatives in Congress to key Administration offices and Department officials. After nearly 20 meetings in less than 48 hours — and many more meetings for the delegation as a whole — I left the Capitol inspired as ever that clean tech can and will be a true engine for the U.S. economy; but I also left even more convinced that our system in Washington is broken, and that today’s stalemate created by partisan politics increasingly risks cannibalizing U.S. economic competitiveness in the 21st century.

Canadian Clean Cash: Renewable Energy Impact in the Wake of the Federal Budget
Despite tension-filled anticipation of the 2012 federal budget announcement on March 29, Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program continues to be one of the most lucrative research and development (R&D) tax incentives in the industrial world. Last year, SR&ED awarded $ 3.6 billion in tax credits to Canadian corporations contributing in varying degrees to the Canadian R&D drive. The budget (Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity: Economic Action Plan 2012) turned out to be a pleasant surprise for SR&ED stakeholders and claimants, as serious cuts to the program were rumored in the days preceding the budget announcement. The 35 percent enhanced Investment Tax Credit (ITC) rate survived the few key modifications to the program. Further revisions, however, will have an impact on companies within the renewable energy industry.

Tribal Lands: An Emerging Market for Renewable Energy Development
Renewable energy projects on tribal lands are fast becoming a reality. Tribal communities in the Southwestern United States reside on lands that are known to be rich with potential for the development of solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal facilities on a large commercial scale. Studies have found that tribal lands nationwide have the potential for producing up to 10 percent of the United States’ renewable energy. This development could mean lower rates for electricity, new directions for the nation’s energy industry and a new economic reality for some Native American tribes and their neighboring communities. To that end, tribal communities such as the Navajo Nation have begun to own and develop renewable energy projects on tribal lands.

Asia Report: Japan Solar FiT Likely In Line With Industry Request
It’s been a year of slow, deliberate debate as Japan plots its future without nuclear power. That future will gain some clarity later this month when a panel charged with recommending Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) for solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and hydropower sends those rate proposals for approval.

Iceland Attracts New Business with Clean Energy
Fishing has long been a vital industry in Iceland. It’s so imprinted on the national psyche that it’s hard to find anyone untouched by it among the tiny population of 320,000. Even Foreign Minister Össur Skarpherdinsson likes to say, “I consider myself to be an old fisherman.”

Normalize Renewable Energy Credits Now
Several renewable energy incentives are on the congressional chopping block this year, and every year, it seems. There are plenty of persuasive arguments on either side regarding whether or not to keep renewable incentives. We believe a long-term energy policy is needed at the federal level to allow the domestic renewable energy industry to grow and ultimately prosper. It will remove the guesswork surrounding what incentives may be available in any given year.

US Re-takes Lead in Clean Energy Race from China — But Not for Long
According to the just-released report “Who’s Winning the Clean Energy Race?” from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the United States invested the most in Clean Energy of any country in 2011, retaking the lead from China, which had held the top sport for the last two years. But the U.S. resurgence is more likely to be a blip than a trend.
